the leftside ensemble of helsinki is a collective of passionate djs from finland, at the moment consisting of sampsa vilhunen, vesa yli-pelkonen and antti eerikäinen. the posse was put together by sampsa vilhunen in 1999 after years of serious record collecting and less serious djing with his soul mates. the leftside ensemble djs are best known for their wahoo! club night, which they successfully run in umo jazz house, helsinki, finland, since 2001. in june 2007, wahoo! moved to a new venue called redrum and will be celebrating the start of its seventh year there!

all the leftside ensemble guys come from different histories in music, which probably makes their dj sets so versatile and tasty. while some of them hail from strong hip hop and disco background, others have been strongly tied up to all things jazz and latin, or having history in mod culture and northern soul. at the present day, the broad musical spectrum of leftside ensemble djs thus ranges from dancefloor jazz, brazilian funk and banging 60's soul steppers to contemporary eclectic dance beats and left-of-centre hip hop. while many club nights promise versatility in music on paper, these guys are naturals in really fulfilling those expectations – with all the right records.

in addition to the quality selection of wide range of music styles, wahoo! has become an acknowledged club night for its superb crowd, relaxed atmosphere and fierce dancing tradition. during the years wahoo! menu has included many top djs and live acts of the scene. wahoo! has also hosted great helsinki ! soul all-nighters with massive line-ups of best of the british and fennoscandian soul and funk djs. one of the wahoo! crew, dj antti eerikäinen, is also known as the head of helsinki based ricky-tick records that is a home for great artists like the five corners quintet, jukka eskola quintet, dalindeo and timo lassy.

in february 1996 hot stepper along with the vibes n' stuff dj team of paul e. lopes and mike tull presented a live and djed soul music showcase called bump n' hustle. from the first sell out night at the rivoli club, the bump n' hustle proved to be wildly successful and is unrivalled as canada's hottest ongoing soul party. bump n' hustle is currently running as a super hot dj night at the monthly rivoli and after all this time was selected as the #2 party of the year 2003 by now magazine. vocalists, mcs, and spoken word artists were in the early years featured as guests at bump n' hustle in a cabaret style presentation including glenn lewis, k-os, divine earth essence, alana bridgewater, wade o brown, naomi n'sombi, jully black and a parade of others. the evening is capped by the bump n' hustle dj roster which includes paul e. lopes and mike tull spinning funky jazz, latin/brazilian, rockas reggae, broken beats, underground/classic hip hop, rare groove and soulful house. the bump n' hustle has also been performed with special guests such as dj frankie cutlass, dancefloor divas gwen mccrae* (gwen drew 900 people in -35c weather two weeks after new years!), taana gardner* and wunmi*, as well as djs gilles peterson*, ufo* , rich medina* and karl injex. in april '98 they presented "the ghetto opera" musical urban drama performance to the sold out opera house. bump n' hustle was also part of harbourfront centre's summer music programming between 1996 and 2002 as a soul weekender on three stages featuring such guest performers as roy ayers, maceo parker, the mighty sparrow, the herbaliser band*, n'dea davenport, zapp and roger troutman, and esthero.

i thought it might be interesting for everybody out there to share the music i got on promo cds during the last years. some of the musicians are well known, some still unreleased. all music with a brazilian touch... of course. (quality differs very much due to the simple reason that some tracks are mastered and others not) echosystem is a finnish outfit. my friend vesa from helsinki sent their cd as a present. pretty nice live band as he told me and the album is also worth listening. japanese band quasimode are doing it only for self defense. this time on the berlin based label sonar kollektiv. business as usual in quasimode killer jazz style. pagode jazz is a rio based band playing a mixture of forro and jazz. next are oxalá from the uk. that´s all i know about them. can´t even remember where i got it from. who can help? finland again, jukka eskola from the well known five corners quintet on his first solo album. galera contribute the fantastic african/brazil tune jinga jangada from the album four seasons on rainycity music from manchester. difusora made a few remixes on berlin based crippled dick hot wax label and disappeared. this track has never been released.it´s a housy remix of convite para vida the title track of the film city of god. brazilian singer carla alexandar from her 2006 released album on danish april label follows. we stay in brazil and listen to the stunning string arrangements of a filial that turn out to be a hip hop project. what a strange combination! i guess they are from rio as i got the cd from maga bo. cloaca is a brazilian/german project from berlin. ethno sounds are usually not going down my road but this tune has something. cor de rosa is a mix künstler treu made years ago for a girl from japan called pat c. carnival meets pop meets easy listening. from his 2005 album released in brazil only: vem. marcos valle doing a jazz waltz. nothing can go wrong. friends from my hometown once gave me a cd with three perfectly home recorded tracks. brazilian classics in the sandy & edinho version. well done! um abraço grande, agapê
